Drake University, a mid-sized private university in Des Moines, Iowa, United States is celebrating Nigeria’s Yinka Ajayi for being the first woman since 1960 to represent the school in track and field at the Olympic Games.
Ajayi is reportedly Drake’s first-ever current female student-athlete to compete in the Olympics and the fifth Bulldog to ever qualify for a track & field event at the Olympics.
Ajayi earned a spot on the 4×400-meter mixed relay team, a new event at this year’s Olympics, by finishing fifth in the 400 meters at the Nigerian Olympic Trials.
An excited Ajayi who was part of Team Nigeria second batch to the Kisarazu camp of the team in Japan expressed excitement about her presence in Tokyo.
“The journey from Abuja was a bit stressful, especially the procedure at the airport in Japan but I feel great and I am grateful to God to be here in Tokyo,”Ajayi said.
