THIS is the sickening moment a driver ploughs into a crowd at a packed crossing leaving five dead and at least 13 people injured.
Dramatic footage shows the moment a man in a black SUV drives into the crowd in the Chinese city of Guangzhou as terrified pedestrians flee for their lives.
The deadly crash took place on Wednesday during rush hour at 17.25 local time at a busy junction near the Zhengjia Plaza.
Cops have arrested the suspect, a 22-year-old man from another city in the same province and launched an investigation.
The head of Guangzhou police said on Chinese social media Weibo: “The driver… was taken in for questioning by police and the accident is currently the subject of a thorough investigation.”
An eyewitness named Hym Chu wrote on a Weibo post: “There was a collective wail. Everyone ran.”
Chu stayed at the scene for two hours to help victims retrieve their belongings the New York Times reported.
Video circulating on social media appears to show the suspect throwing cash in the air shortly before being arrested.
The man is said to have tried to flee the scene before he was stopped by bystanders.
An eyewitness told local media the driver ploughed into pedestrians at the junction without stopping afterwards.
The incident sparked outrage in the city of 19 million.
