PADDY POWER have PAID OUT bets on Liverpool winning this season’s Premier League – before a ball has been kicked.
The bookmakers surprised punters on Saturday night after Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Manchester City in the Community Shield.
The Reds go into the season opener this weekend after a 3-1 win at the King Power Stadium which secured the first silverware of the new campaign.
Trent Alexander-Arnold had Liverpool ahead at the break before substitute Julian Alvarez leveled the game on 70 minutes.
Mo Salah scored from the penalty spot with seven minutes to go before new-boy Darwin Nunez added a third in injury time.
And that performance is enough to convince Paddy Power that Liverpool will reverse the standings of last season and see them clinch the title back.
The decision was made just before the full-time whistle on Saturday and all single bets staked were declared winners.
Worse yet for Manchester City supporters, they had to exit the King Power past ad-vans that Paddy Power had placed around the ground declaring their early pay out.
Liverpool were second favourites for the league title and were a general 2/1 shot to win it this year.
City go into the new campaign the short-price 4/7 favourites to retain their crown.
The pay out has cost the bookies a six-figure sum before England’s top flight even gets going.
Paddy Power, a spokesperson for Paddy Power, said “Some say the Community Shield is just a glorified friendly – but you won’t hear that at Paddy Power.
“Oh no, we take the traditional curtain raiser so seriously that we’ve decided to be ultra-generous and hit the big red button marked ‘Pay Out‘ to punters who backed Liverpool to win the 2022/23 Premier League title prior to them beating Man City at the King Power today.”
He continued “In the very unlikely event that we’ve called this wrong we’ll end up with some very expensive pie on our faces.”
